Is Bamboo a Good Benchtop Option? Sustainability, Costs & Durability

Written by Daryl Boakes | May 14, 2026 2:31:09 AM

Bamboo has quietly built a strong following with Kiwi homeowners who want warmth without the timber price tag. It looks stunning, performs harder than people expect, and sits at the friendliest entry point in the timber benchtop world. So, is bamboo a good benchtop option, or is the lower price too good to be true?

The reality is that bamboo benchtops perform far better than many people expect, particularly at this price point. Here are a few things worth knowing before you buy.

Is bamboo durable?

This is the first question almost every customer asks, and it's a fair one. Bamboo's affordability makes some people wonder whether they're getting a flimsy material dressed up as a benchtop.

The reality is the opposite. Bamboo is one of the strongest natural fibres on earth, and bamboo benchtops are built from multiple laminated layers in a ply construction that makes them dense, stable, and resistant to dents. Even raw, the material is impressively tough. Add a quality coating, and you have a top that holds its own against more expensive timbers.

Bamboo also takes stain beautifully. You can colour it almost any shade before sealing, which gives you serious flexibility if you love the look of darker hardwoods but not their price.60mm Bamboo Stained - Kitchen Dynamics

Why it's the most affordable timber option

Bamboo is the fastest-growing plant on earth. It can be harvested roughly every five years, compared with the decades hardwood trees need to mature. That makes it dramatically more renewable and dramatically cheaper to source.

It's also quicker for us to work with. We buy bamboo in pre-laminated sheets, so there's no time-consuming lamination process required in our workshop. That translates to less labour and fewer hours, thus a friendlier price.

What you receive at that price point is a strong, durable, attractive timber that can last 20+ years with the right finish.

How bamboo performs over time

In high-wear zones (around stoves, sinks, prep areas), bamboo holds up well, especially when coated with our Resin finish. Resin-coated bamboo lasts as long as high-end timbers like oak or walnut that are treated the same way.

If you go with an oil or polyurethane finish, bamboo still outperforms softwoods like pine or macrocarpa by a clear margin. The one situation we steer people away from oil and polyurethane is tops with sink cut-outs, particularly undermount sinks, where ongoing water exposure on the end grain can eventually cause issues.

For a tight budget that still wants peak performance, a resin-coated bamboo top is hard to beat. You're getting our toughest finish on our most affordable timber.

Where bamboo fits best

Bamboo is a great match for kitchen renovations on any budget, forever homes, rental properties, holiday homes, vanities, and laundries. Anywhere you want warmth and character without overspending.

For dry zones, oil or polyurethane finishes work well, offering the most economical option, while Bamboo is still a hard timber option. The Woodsmiths recommend resin for any benchtop where possible, especially with a sink-out, to keep the timber protected from water and daily wear for the long term.

The sustainability side

All of our bamboo comes from FSC-certified sources, which means the supply chain is traceable and the forests are managed responsibly. That's not always the case with off-the-shelf bamboo at big-box retailers, where sourcing is often unclear.

We also stock bamboo in a range of sheet sizes and thicknesses. Choosing dimensions that fit within our sheet sizes means fewer joins, less wasted material, and a cleaner finish.

Custom-built vs. off-the-shelf

This is where the gap really shows. A Bunnings bamboo benchtop, or any pre-cut DIY product, only comes in standard sizes (normally very small). That often forces multiple butt joins across your run, and butt joins on a bamboo kitchen benchtop are visually obvious and tend to collect grime over time.

When you order bamboo kitchen benchtops from The Woodsmiths, you get:

  • Every benchtop crafted to the exact millimetre you need, with hob and sink cut-outs (and sinks fitted) done in our workshop.
  • Larger sheet sizes than most retailers, which often means fewer (or no) butt joins across your run.
  • A fully finished top delivered ready to install, not a flat-packed slab you have to spend hours sanding and coating.
  • Installation support across Auckland and Northland, plus nationwide delivery in NZ.

What the warranty actually covers

Every bamboo benchtop NZ customers buy from us comes with a written warranty: five years on oil or polish finishes, ten years on resin. That covers faulty workmanship or materials. You won't find anything close on a flat-packed hardware-store product, and it's worth real money in peace of mind.

Bamboo is also low maintenance once installed. Care is the same as any other timber: a wipe-down for daily cleaning, an occasional re-oil for oil-finished tops, and very little fuss for resin.

Bamboo is just one of many timber options we work with, and seeing it next to the others can help with the final call. Download the Woodsmiths catalogue to see the full range of products, timbers, and finishes in one place.
